Trails What's so great about Laguna? It's in the mountains, of course. There are a number of trails in the Laguna Mountain Recreation Area. Some of the drop off the top of Laguna and into the valleys on either side of the mountain (Nobel Canyon and Thing Valley). These will be covered in sections of their own. Also there are two major trails that, unfortunately, are off-limits to bikers. The remaining trails are definitely worth the 45 minute to hour trip up from San Diego. Big Laguna Trail (10 miles round trip) For the most part the Big Laguna Trail is a smooth narrow singletrack winding along the edge of Big Laguna Meadow and through the trees. This section is outstanding for novice riders. Be careful as there are quite a few hikers and dogs off leash along this trail. The intermediate to advanced rider can really get moving along this trail. It is wide open, so you would have to be an absolute space cadet to run into someone along this. That said, there has been a bit of a problem between bikes and other users, so be careful and communicate on the trail. The trail leaves the meadow after about 4 miles and winds its way up toward the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). This part turns into a more technical singletrack that is perfect for intermediate riders. At the top, you will end at the PCT. Mountain Bikes are not allowed on the PCT, so the Big Laguna Trail is an out-and-back trail. Indian Creek/Pioneer Mail (8 miles round trip) For those wishing to add a little more to their rides, the Indian Creek/Pioneer Mail trail will add a more advance section of trail to the course. This ride is great for those staying at the campgrounds. The trails start by following the Nobel Canyon Trail for the first 3 miles. Then the Indian Creek Trail breaks off and heads toward the Cuyamaca Mountains. The Indian Creek Trail can be followed all the way into the Cuyamaca State Park if so desired. Otherwise, turn off on the Pioneer Mail trail and follow it to the trailhead. You may return by the same route, or by the Sunrise Highway. Noble Canyon Trail (20 miles round trip) Noble Canyon is covered in its own section. It is a 10 mile trail that drops almost 3000 feet into Pine Valley. It is one of San Diego's Favorite rides. Many people do the ride only down hill. To do this you park your car at the Pine Valley trail head and drive a second car to the top. |
